This POD is a way of observing, collectively, how hidden values and intentions can control our behaviour, and how unnoticed cultural differences can clash without our realising what is occurring. It can therefore be seen as an arena in which collective learning takes place and out of which a sense of increased harmony, fellowship and creativity can arise.

The Power of Open DialogueTM is a method of looking within to understand the judgements we make in the communication process and learn to park our judgements so we can truly indulge in dialogue leading to shared meaning. The spiritual side of the POD is to explore our very being; the influences and beliefs we hold and identify the role these influences and beliefs play in our every day communication.

Reuel Howe, in his book The Miracle of Dialogue, describes dialogue as the meeting of meanings. In order for dialogue to occur there are two people that you are going to have to deal with (1) yourself and (2) the other person. Howe says, and I also believe, that meeting a person's meaning with your own involves taking a big risk: the risk that you will be changed and new possibilities for communication open to you. There are two basic underlying principles for dialogue: (1) cooperation in communication which is a far more complex and mentally demanding activity than domination or conflict and (2) from the work of developmental theorist Robert Kegan is, that in order to guide a process, a person has to be able to observe it. Therefore, in order to improve the communication process, you have to gradually develop the ability to be both a participant in, and an observer of, your own conversational activities.
