Core Values:

 
Spotlight on core values and transforming these into acceptable behaviours in the workplace.
 
Create standards for personal behaviour, group behaviour and organisational behaviour in terms of how to conduct business with internal and external customers.

A series of questions to help participants focus on their value base and differences in beliefs amongst the group.

Start with the Values Game.
Individuals reflecting and journaling about the values they hold personally, plus group discussion.

  • What are They?
  • What are the 6-8 key organisational values/themes?

Reflection: Personal vs Professional

Individuals reflecting on how their personal values 'fit' with organisational values. Where there is a good fit and where there may be discrepancy, plus group discussion.

Exploring Behaviour in the Workplace

  • What poor behaviours are experienced or observed in the workplace?
  • How do these behaviours impact on interpersonal relationships, teams and customers?

Activity:

Small groups demonstrating 'poor' behaviours (3-4 small groups creating a scenario and presenting it back to the large group)

Debrief

  • How does experiencing and being reminded of these behaviours make you feel?
  • How do these behaviours impact on the organisation's business goals and public perception?
  • How do these behaviours impact on attraction and retention of staff?

Living the Organisational Values

Activity:

Small groups working on 3 behavioural descriptors for each of the top 6-8 values and feeding these back to the large group until agreement is reached. Note: rules for writing descriptors will be provided

Butchers paper on walls (one for each Value)

Rating the Values

A rating process is used so that each participant gets to score how strongly the organisational values are adhered to.

Large group discussion around results

Rating scale drawn onto butchers paper for each value and sticky dots used for voting

Growing the Organisational Values

Activity:

Small groups working on strategies to improve the ratings for those values which scored low and maintaining the rating for those that scored highly

Large group sharing and agreement

Action Planning

3 levels of action planning:

  1. Identifying the strategies for management to take and who will be responsible for these
  2. Individual actions regarding behaviour they will 'stop' 'start' or 'continue' as a result of today's discussion
  3. Actions they can take as supervisors when they get back to their teams
