The Developing Leaders Program

Step 10 - Continuous Improvement

Duration: 1 Day plus project work

Course Descriptor

Continuous Improvement is an operational philosophy used to achieve substantial improvement by focusing on:

  • Customer Satisfaction
  • Universal Participation
  • Ongoing Improvement

No name elicits deeper reverence among quality management professionals than that of the late Dr. W. Edwards Deming. In his writing, teaching and demonstrations, he showed the counter-productivity of short-term management strategies. He outlined how to go beyond these techniques to achieve cooperation, employee commitment, and process improvement for long- term productivity.

When we talk of continuous improvement we are talking about productivity improvements. Productivity is simply a measure of outputs against inputs. The productivity being measured can be that of an individual, a work team, whole workplace or entire organisation. Cushioned in productivity is quality; the concepts of quality and their role in achieving continuous improvement are integral to success.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Define continuous improvement and quality management.
  • Define ways of achieving continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and evaluate current systems and communication practices.
  • Describe quality and why it is important.
  • Identify factors that adversely affect performance.
  • Identify systems and methods and other changes that can be a basis of improvement.
  • List some of the tools for continous improvement.
