Step 9 - Workplace Safety

Duration: 1 Day plus project work 

Course Descriptor

Work safety and health laws aim to promote and secure the safety and health of persons at work through the elimination, reduction and control of hazards.
 
Safety and health in Western Australian workplaces is regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 supported by codes of practice and guidance notes.
 
Within the mining industry, workplaces are governed by the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994.
 
‘An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to the safety of mines and mining operations and the inspection and regulation of mines, mining operations and plant and substances supplied to or used at mines; to promote and improve the safety and health of persons at mines and for connected purposes.’ 
 

At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Describe the OSH legislation, its purposes and principles relevant to workplace safety
  • Describe a process for planning safe workplace practices
  • Explain the concepts of risk assessment
  • Identify workplace hazards and devise methods of managing / minimising them
  • Describe the hierarchy of control measures
  • Investigate accidents according to accepted procedures
  • Describe how the OSH legislation is enforced
  • Use appropriate reporting methods for monitoring workplace safety issues and areas of non-conformance
